During the Golden Age (roughly 1600 - 1700), Vlissingen and Middelburg were important and prosperous cities. The beautiful Lampsinshuis was built at that time and is now used by the Maritime Muzeeum Zeeland.

See beautiful miniature ships, listen to stories about life in the ports and at sea. Michiel de Ruyter and Cornelis Lampsins are central to the stories. This gives you an idea of both the enormous prosperity that transatlantic trade brought and its downside (such as slavery and the harsh conditions of the sailors).

The museum certainly issuitable for children. Pick up a booklet at the cash register with assignments for your kids, such as: pilot your ship through the Western Scheldt or reenact a sea battle. There are also various interactive parts in the audio tour, such as independently searching for gems in the collection of depot items. Learn about the contemporary ports of Vlissingen, Terneuzen and Ghent (North Sea Port) and finally walk up the wooden spiral staircase to the roof terrace for a beautiful view of Vlissingen, the marina and the Western Scheldt.

There is a café in the museum that consists of a few seats and a coffee machine. The Ballamy Park is within walking distance of the museum. Here you will find several eateries, including Marcus restaurant. Tip: the falafel sandwich!
