Natuurgebied Braakman

Young kids (4-8)
Older kids (8-12)

Originally Braakman was a estuary, but after reclamation in the 1950s it became a large nature reserve in the middle of Dutch Flanders.

You can of course enjoy a nice walk in nature, but Braakman-Noord has a few extra fun activities for kids.

In the play forest, (older) children can play on the large climbing frame, there is a water playground with a pump and there are tree trunks in the puddles that you can walk over. In short, a nice romp in nature.

There are also two walks especially for kids: the Animal Friends Path and the Gnome Path. These can be walked any day of the week, but it is best to come on Sunday between 1:00 PM and 4:30 PM, because then the visitor's centre is open and you can rent a bag containing assignments (in Dutch) while completing these walks. There are different assignment booklets depending on the season.

We would definitely recommend coming on a Sunday afternoon, because the volunteers at the visitor's centre are super friendly and they also regularly organize activities (see the Facebook page for the agenda). In the visitor's centre itself there are some information boards, taxidermied animals, a sandbox and the kids can color a drawing. There's also the opportunity to buy some drinks and snacks here.

The routes are 0.5 to 3 km depending on which one you choose and are best suited for children between 3 and 8 years old.

During our visit we took the gnome route. We set off with a gnome hat on, red makeup on our cheeks and a backpack with assignment attributes. The assignments are fun for the kids. The sticker sheet that can be covered with things you find in nature was also enjoyable.

However, this route leads through a young, planted forest with little variation. We've definitely seen nicer nature in Zeeland. One thing to note is that this route is not suitable for families with strollers or wheelchairs.

Fortunately, the rest of the nature area is nice and Braakman Zuid also looked beautiful (from the car). Due to lack of time we were unable to explore the entire play forest, but we will definitely return on a Sunday afternoon for the rest of the play forest and the Animal Friends route!
